Medulla — Turning shared urgency into collective capacity

Welcome

Turning shared urgency into collective capacity.

Medulla is a workspace, event space and community in Berlin. We bring together people from public institutions, research, civic initiatives, the arts and technology to work on problems no one can solve alone, such as preparing the city for heat and disruption.

Come to an event, work from here, or build something with us.

Purpose

Why we exist

Getting through a crisis is only the start. Every response shapes what comes next. It can build skills and trust, or exhaust people and lock us into costly dependencies.

We want people and institutions to have more real freedom to shape their future, within the planet’s limits. That takes trusted contacts, shared knowledge, working public infrastructure and time to learn.

Programme

What happens here

Talks, workshops and project work, linked so that a good question can find collaborators, a practical test and a next step.

Our first focus is climate adaptation in Berlin, especially heat. Past gatherings, like the Public Vitality Camp, have covered civic infrastructure, institutional change, bioregional governance and healthy neighbourhoods.

Community

Who’s here

A courtyard in Kreuzberg, with events on the ground floor and shared desks upstairs. Small organisations and independent practitioners work side by side and learn from each other.

Our name comes from the medulla oblongata, the part of the brainstem that keeps us breathing.

Approach

How we work

Working together is hard. Organisations have different rhythms, mandates and resources. We set up what makes collaboration last: time, money, clear roles and a way to handle disagreement.

We draw on systems thinking, strategic design, civic technology and organisational development. Humour is welcome. So is changing your mind.

From the personal to the systemic

  1. Personal

Trust, attention, staying engaged under strain.

  2. Collective

    Preparedness and cooperation across organisations.

  3. Systemic

The economic, political and ecological conditions around us.
